What Families Need to Know / Expectations

Culler CLC Program Statement
The Culler Community Learning Centers consists of partnerships that provide opportunities and supportive services that lead to improved student learning and development, stronger families, and healthier neighborhoods.
The program policies and procedures are non-discriminatory in regards to ability, race, color, national origin, religion or gender.
Expectations
All students and families must agree to the following rules and guidelines of our programs in order to participate:

  1. BE SAFE (use sidewalks & crosswalks, keep hands, feet, & objects to self, use kind words, do not harm self or others).
  2. BE RESPECTFUL (of fellow students, staff, property, parents and family members, maintain personal space, listen without interrupting, include others in conversation, help others to be successful, work to solve problems).
  3. BE RESPONSIBLE (follow directions, arrive/leave at the designated time, wait your turn, wait quietly at the designated area, put materials away in proper place, put garbage into trash cans).
  4. Regular attendance and participation in all curriculum areas is required.
  5. Some activities may require running and/or other physical exertion.
  6. Nuisance items (headphones, CD players, video games, cell phones, pagers, toys, etc.) are not permitted and should be left at home. These items may be confiscated by CLC staff and will be returned at the earliest convenient time.
  7. CLC is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.
  8. Violations that may result in suspension or expulsion from programs include: violence, threats, abusive language, running away/hiding, not following directions, refusal to participate, and poor attendance. Suspensions are used at the discretion of the CLC Director.

Behavior Support
The Culler Community Learning Center utilizes the problem solving technique called Think Time whenever any student exhibits a behavior that is disruptive to the class. The technique emphasizes the seriousness of education, respectfulness of the learning environment, and the importance of students taking responsibility for their own behavior.
For Think Time, the student is asked to sit off to the side, removed from the activity or lesson to think about their behavior. When the teacher has an opportunity and the student appears ready, the teacher will ask the student what their behavior was that got them removed. Once the student successfully identifies the behavior, the student must then identify the correct behavior and commit to acting within the rules and expectations of the program. Program staff will notify the family when the student has been directed to Think Time three or more times within the school week. Staff will ask for family assistance if problems persist or if a problem is unusually challenging.
We request family cooperation and support in the effort to provide before and after-school environments that are conducive to learning. Feel free to contact staff if you have any questions.
Procedures
The Culler Community Learning Center after-school program is designed to provide Culler students opportunities to learn and grow in a safe, fun, caring, and structured environment. The program meets every school day and we expect regular attendance by enrolled students. Programs are provided at no cost to Culler families.
After-School Program: 3:05 – 5:45 p.m.

  • Students are picked up directly from class by CLC staff at 3:05 p.m. and led to designated after-school program areas where they are supervised at all times by caring and trained CLC staff.
  • Families are provided with a schedule of each registered student’s activities.
  • Students are served a snack and participate in an Academic support program designed specifically for Culler students until 4:00 p.m.
  • Students are surveyed on academic, asset development, and enrichment activities.
  • Students participate in club activities from 3:05 p.m.-5:45 p.m.
  • Families register students for club activities in order of preference. Students not including a club registration form are assigned clubs. Students may not change clubs until the next quarter.
  • Dismissal takes place at 5:45 p.m. at the rear (South) entry. All walk home students are dismissed from front (East) door.
  • You may pick up your student earlier than 5:30 p.m., though this is not recommended. We do not have staff assigned after 6:00 p.m., so please pick up your student promptly. For students not picked up by 6:00 p.m., we will attempt to call the family and emergency contact(s). If we have been unsuccessful reaching these contacts, we will contact the police so that your child is in a safe place.
  • No student will be released to someone that is not on the authorized escort list, unless special arrangements are made in writing or in person prior to pick-up. Authorized escorts will be asked to show a picture I.D. Please Notify CLC Staff in advance if an authorized escort will be picking up your child.

Safety and Transportation
Your child safety is our first priority. Every precaution will be taken to ensure your child’s safety. We follow all school rules and reinforce them at all times. Rules are posted on the bulletin board all year and are used as a constant reminder for students and staff. When field trips are taken all children are transported in Malone Center vehicles. All drivers have completed drivers training with the Malone Center.
Inclement Weather
If LPS closes due to bad weather, CLC will not be in session. Please make other arrangements with family members to pick up your students. We are always looking for feedback regarding our programs. Feel free to talk to any leader regarding our programs and your child. I look forward to a great school year as the CLC Director for Culler.
