1) The graphs being compiled by the Literacy and Beyond teacher
in regard to student improvement in reading comprehension,
fluency and phonics are fantastic. The growth is exciting
that some of the students have made in their reading fluency
and comprehension. We have a few students whose growth has
been extraordinary including; Erica Bruyette, Edgar Torres,
Manny Laravie and Spader Watts. We are very proud of their
reading efforts. Erica is a little girl who came to us with
limited sight-word vocabulary and reading at a DRA level of
6. At this point she is at a DRA level of 18 which is second
grade compared to the beginning 1st grade level she started
with in March. Her single sight-word level has improved to
the end of third grade. One fantastic little worker! We look
forward to our summer program and the new writing pieces that
we are adding to the program.
2) Riley has grown by leaps and bounds this semester! He
used to portray many elements of immaturity. I noticed a large
change in Riley around March. He took full responsibility
for a broken jump rope. He chose to tell the truth the first
time. He also chose to talk to his mom about it. After this
incident, the CLC staff at Everett began to put more trust
in him. We were always sure to give him extra responsibilities.
This became the foundation for Riley’s road to maturity.
He has worked hard to keep his reputation for responsibility
and trust! Many of peers have noticed his change and feel
like they can trust him too! His other elements of immaturity
have melted away as a result of trust from CLC staff. He is
polite and waits for his turn to speak. He helps other and
always asks permission before he acts. He is a wonderful example
of what the CLC can do to improve the character of a child.
3) Tracey has shown a lot of improvement in his reading skills.
At the beginning of the second semester he had a hard time
reading through a sentence. Dedicated CLC staff sat with Tracey
for countless hours over the next few months and the results
have been amazing! He hit a milestone when he announced that
he read a whole page by himself, and then it was a whole chapter.
And now, Tracey can read entire books without assistance;
as he has proven at One Book-One Family. He was so thrilled
when he finished the first one and could say he did it on
his own! His practice during homework time has been very rewarding
to him and all of us who can share in his joy and victory.
4) Joseph was cold and tough. No one seemed to listen to
him or believe him when he spoke. He was uncomfortable around
adults and especially women. There is a lack of good female
role models in his life. I could see a boy who needed to be
heard! So I started listening. Myself, and other CLC staff
started to hear him out more. We took time to listen to everything
from school work, friendship problems, to silly jokes, and
stories. He slowly began to trust the CLC staff and he began
to open up more with problems and solutions. Joseph has now
become a warm funny young man who can express himself without
stamping a foot or yelling. He trusts the female CLC staff
more and has more respect for the people he comes in contact
with. Joseph still has a lot of growing to do, but with this
small step, he now has the tools to figure out how to grow!
