Music ‘n’ Motion is a pre-school music program
offered through the WLCLC and Early Childhood Outreach Program.
The music group met once a week and served 16 youngsters in
the West Lincoln neighborhood. The group was primarily composed
of children from two daycares within walking distance of the
school; ranging from ages 1 ½ to 5. Over fifty percent
of the children qualify for Title 20 (childcare funds). For
the last session, staff invited parents to attend a 30 minute
Music ‘n’ Motion program. The program was held
on a Wednesday morning at 10:15, and amazingly 18 parents
and grandparents showed up with cameras and camcorders. The
parent’s involvement was very exciting and proof that
the music group was important to each of the pre-school students.
Many parents left saying, “That’s what he’s
been singing” or “That’s why she wants to
play the guitar”. The music group played a positive
role in connecting families to their neighborhood school at
an early stage of their education.
At the end of March, the WLCLC put together a heritage school
club. The group of about 40 fourth graders went to Goodrich
Middle School two days a week. At Goodrich, Ms. Young and
a few middle school volunteers, helped the West Lincoln students
make bonnets and suspenders. Not only did the students learn
how to hand sew and use a sewing machine, they also learned
about traditional food made during the heritage time period.
The students spent a few of the days making snicker doodle
cookies and salt water taffy. The students were then able
to wear their bonnets and suspenders while attending the annual
4th grade Heritage School Day. The success of the club showed
in the number of kids that participated and the pride they
demonstrated while wearing their handmade clothing. Through
this club, we were able to unite an annual school function
with the Community Learning Center
